Becoming a Member
1. For those not previously baptized -You make it known to a pastor your desire to live as a disciple of Christ. Then you will be baptized in a service of your choosing where you will become a member of the United Methodist Church. Last, you will pledge to support First United Methodist Church with your prayers, presence, gifts and service.
2. For those previously baptized but unconfirmed in their faith and church membership - You make it known to a pastor that you have been baptized and your desire to live as a disciple of Christ. Then you will become a member of the United Methodist Church. Last, you will pledge to support First United Methodist Church with your prayers, presence, gifts and service.
3. For those who wish to transfer their membership from another United Methodist Church - You may join this congregation by the promise of a certificate of transfer from your former church and upon your renewal of your membership vows to be loyal the First United Methodist Church in Lewisville with your prayers, presence, gifts and service.
4. For those who wish to transfer their membership from another denomination - You may join this church by the promise of a certificate of transfer from your former church, and/or by a declaration of faith and a willingness to be loyal to the United Methodist Church in Lewisville with your prayers, presence gifts and service.
5. For those who are temporarily not residing near their home church - You may join the church an affiliate member, and shall be entitled to all local church privileges and responsibilities, except being able to vote in bodies that relate to the General Church (i.e. District, Annual, or General conference etc.).
6. For those who wish to maintain their membership in their former denomination - You may join the church as an associate member and shall be under the same conditions as an affiliate member, but you may not become a voting member of the Administrative Board.
7. Children's membership status in the church - Children are encouraged to be presented for the Sacrament of Baptism at an early age. However, a child can be presented for baptism at any age. After a child is baptized she/he is placed on the baptized roll and is under the care and guidance of the congregation. Children will remain on the baptized roll until confirmation and reception into full membership of the church. A confirmation class will be offered to all children in the sixth grade or those who are older and have not been confirmed. If a child by its own volition give evidence of their own Christian faith and are able to understand the privileges and obligations of church membership, they may be received into full membership.
8. Youth membership status in the church - Youth who are full members of the church have all the rights and responsibilities of church membership. Youth who are members in good standing with another congregation can transfer their membership. Youth who are not confirmed will be placed on the preparatory roll and shall be annually offered an opportunity to enroll in a confirmation class. Those youth who choose not to be confirmed will remain on the preparatory roll until they are nineteen years of age, after this time they will be assigned to the constituency roll of the church. Youth may join the church without enrolling in confirmation class after a consultation with the pastor.
9. All adults who wish to become members of First United Methodist Church of Lewisville - Each adult in the household must fill out and return to the church office, a NEW MEMBER INFORMATION form. You can pick up a form in the office, or print the form to fill out and return.
